The children made Christmas cards for the inmates at the Camp Hill Correctional Facility. The cards will be delivered with the items collected for the Hounds of Prison Education program.
During our morning meeting the children are being exposed to bar graphs (weather), reading a thermometer, counting by 10s, patterns (using different pictures for they days of the week in an AB pattern), counting money (putting 1 penny in a bag each day, changing it to a nickel after 5 days), and keeping a tally of the pennies. We will be progressing to different patterns and different coins. The dime was introduced this week when we accrued 5 pennies and 1 nickel! We started counting the days we have been in school, 25, which is 2 groups of ten plus 5. I introduced the quarter this week when when reached the 25th day of school and turned 2 dimes, and 4 pennies into a quarter. The children counted 1 - 12, by 2's to 24, by 5's to 60, and by 10's to 120 while doing the Macarena. They may not know it by heart yet but they will! I started teaching telling time. The children were introduced to a 1 - 100 counting chart this week that we will add to our morning meeting lesson by removing a number and asking which number is missing.

Workshop Way
Workshop Way is a program that teaches children independent activities to help them advance their eye hand coordination, fine motor, visual discrimination, visual motor and gross motor abilities. The children completed a pattern activity, clay activity (fine motor), and drawing lines between spaces (fine and visual motor activities) by rotating tables. The children have learned how to do number perception cards, pattern beads, tracing and pegboards. There are very specific directions for accomplishing these activities. This week the children learned how to print their names using 4 different colored markers. The first line they make when printing a letter is green, for the second line a red marker is used, if there is a third line blue is used and if there is a fourth line black is used. For example, if you are making an 'S' you only need a green it is one fluid stroke, if you are making an 'E' you need all 4 colors. It requires a lot of concentration to print your name this way but it also emphasizes the correct way to form the letters.

Notes
The teachers were informed at our last faculty meeting that French lessons for the children in grades K - 5 will begin next Monday, January12th! The kindergarteners will have French class on Mondays from 10:25 - 10:55. I am so excited!
Regarding school closings due to inclement weather, if it is a one hour delay your child will need to be at school at 9:10, if it is a two hour delay your child will need to be at school by 10:10. St. Joseph School follows Mechanicsburg School District for closings and delays.
Now that the weather is getting colder it may be a good idea to keep a hat and a pair of mittens in your child's backpack. We will continue to go out and get fresh air everyday until it starts getting closer to the freezing point. During the winter there may be many days when we have indoor recess. Chapstick or Vaseline would come in handy. Many of the children have had chapped lips. If your child is prone to chapped lips please put a stick of chap stick in their backpack.
We have posters in the classroom where we put up your child's name when they accomplish shoe tying, knowing their birthday, knowing their address, and knowing their telephone number. It would be helpful if you could practice these at home. helping your child to zip would be very helpful as well. Some other areas we are working on in school are counting 1 -20, identifying the numerals 1-20, and identifying upper and lower case letters.
Your child will be bringing home their sight words on index cards in the zipper bag in the folder. Please review these words with your child and return them to the zipper bag.
The school is collecting Campbell's Soup labels, Box Tops, and soda can tabs to benefit the Ronald MacDonald House, (there is a class contest for this).
God bless and Happy New Year!
